What is YouTube ReVanced?

YouTube ReVanced is a free, ad-blocking version of the official YouTube app for Android. It adds background play, SponsorBlock, and a few other features YouTube normally locks behind a paid subscription.

What makes it different from most mods is how it is built. The developer of teams does not just edit the YouTube app once and upload a finished file. ReVanced uses patches. A patch is a small piece of code that changes one specific part of the app. One patch removes ads. Another turns on background play. These patches get applied on top of a copy of the real YouTube app.

ReVanced vs YouTube Vanced — What Changed

YouTube Vanced shut down in March 2022 after Google sent its development team a legal notice. The team stopped all work and confirmed no future updates would come. A group of developers picked up where Vanced left off shortly after. They could not legally use the Vanced name or any of its code, so they rebuilt the entire system from scratch using the patching method described above. That project became ReVanced.

Most Vanced users moved over for one simple reason. Vanced was frozen in time at its last 2022 build, and every YouTube update after that pushed it closer to breaking completely. ReVanced kept getting patched as YouTube changed its app, so features like ad blocking and background play kept working long after Vanced stopped receiving any support.

There is also a practical difference in how each one is installed. Vanced came as a single pre-built file you could just download and install. ReVanced normally requires patching the app yourself using ReVanced Manager, though pre-built versions are also available for anyone who prefers a simpler install.

ReVanced vs ReVanced Extended (RVX) — Which One Should You Use?

Once you start looking into ReVanced, you will run into another name pretty quickly: ReVanced Extended, usually shortened to RVX. The two are closely related but not exactly the same thing. RVX is a fork of the original ReVanced project, maintained separately by a developer who goes by inotia00. This simply means someone took the original open-source code and built their own version on top of it. RVX adds extra patches and settings the main ReVanced project has not included yet.

Is YouTube ReVanced Legal and Safe?

Virus Free
No Root Required
No Data Collection

On safety, ReVanced is about as transparent as a mod can get. The patching code is publicly available on GitHub, where any developer can inspect exactly what it does. The APK file available on this site is scanned through VirusTotal before upload, and no root access is required, so your device’s system files stay untouched.

On legality, the honest answer is that it sits in a gray area. ReVanced does not host or distribute YouTube’s official app code itself, it only provides patches that modify a copy you already have. Modifying YouTube’s app does go against YouTube’s terms of service. Google has not taken legal action against the ReVanced project the way it did with Vanced, but there is no guarantee that stays true forever.

In practice, no widespread reports exist of individual users facing legal consequences for installing ReVanced. The risk, if any, has historically fallen on people distributing the tool, not the people using it.

Key Features of YouTube ReVanced

Ad-Free Viewing — All Ad Types Blocked

ReVanced removes every ad format YouTube runs, not just the obvious ones. Pre-roll ads before a video starts are blocked. Mid-roll ads that cut into longer videos are blocked too, along with banner ads and sponsored cards in search and the home feed. This is handled through a dedicated patch built specifically for ad removal, updated whenever YouTube changes how it serves ads.

SponsorBlock — Auto-Skip Sponsored Segments

A lot of creators get paid to mention products in the middle of their videos. SponsorBlock fixes this through crowdsourced data, millions of users manually mark the exact timestamps of sponsored sections, and that data sits in a public database anyone can access. When a video plays, it automatically jumps past any marked segment. No tapping forward, no sitting through a 60-second ad read you never asked for.

Background Play — Listen with Screen Off

The official YouTube app stops playback the moment you lock your phone or switch to another app. ReVanced removes this restriction through a dedicated patch that disables that limit. Lock your screen, open another app, reply to a message, the audio just keeps playing without interruption.

Return YouTube Dislike — Real Ratings Restored

In November 2021, Google hid the public dislike count on YouTube. ReVanced includes a patch that pulls dislike data from an independent, community-run database called Return YouTube Dislike, then displays it right below the video exactly where it used to sit.

Picture-in-Picture — Multitask While Watching

Picture-in-Picture shrinks whatever you are watching into a small floating window that stays on top of other apps. You can drag it to any corner of the screen and resize it. On the official app, switching apps stops the video immediately, ReVanced removes that limit entirely.

Custom Themes — AMOLED Black & Material You

The official app gives you a basic light or dark mode and not much else. ReVanced adds true AMOLED black, a pure black background that saves real battery on OLED screens, along with Material You support that matches the app’s accent colors to your wallpaper.

Video Quality & Codec Control

YouTube usually decides video quality and codec for you based on your connection speed. ReVanced hands that control back, letting you set a default playback quality and force specific codecs like VP9 or AV1 for sharper detail and smaller file sizes.

Privacy — Tracking and Telemetry Removed

The official app sends a steady stream of data back to Google in the background. ReVanced strips out a large portion of this tracking before it leaves your device and sanitizes shared links by removing the extra tracking parameters Google attaches by default.

How ReVanced Actually Works (Patches Explained Simply)?

ReVanced Manager is the tool that actually applies the patches described above. You open the Manager, select the official YouTube APK, then pick which patches you want included. Tap a button, and the Manager applies all the selected patches onto that YouTube app, producing a new file with everything baked in.

This patch-based approach is also why ReVanced tends to survive YouTube updates longer than older mods like Vanced did. A pre-built mod is one fixed file, if YouTube changes its code, the entire file can break and someone has to rebuild it from scratch. With patches, only the specific patch tied to whatever changed needs fixing, the rest keep working exactly as before.

How to Download & Install YouTube ReVanced APK

You have two paths here. Patch the app yourself using ReVanced Manager for full control over which features get included, or skip that step and install a pre-built APK that already has the common patches applied.

1

Step 1: Download ReVanced Manager

Download ReVanced Manager from the link on this page and install it like a normal APK file.

2

Step 2: Download MicroG

MicroG handles Google account sign-in for the patched app since it cannot use Google Play Services directly. Install this before opening ReVanced for the first time, or login will fail.

3

Step 3: Enable Unknown Sources

Go to your Android Settings, open Security or Privacy depending on your device, and turn on Install from Unknown Sources.

4

Step 4: Patch or Install the Pre-Built APK

If using ReVanced Manager, open it, select YouTube as the app to patch, choose your patches (ad blocking, background play, and SponsorBlock are usually selected by default), then tap the patch button.

5

Step 5: Sign In with Your Google Account

Open the app, tap Sign In, and enter your Google account details. Since MicroG is already installed, login goes through without errors, and your subscriptions, playlists, and watch history sync automatically.

What’s New in Latest Version (v20.40.45 )

This version is built on the latest official YouTube release and has been patched and tested before upload.

  • Ad-blocking patch updated — covers a new ad format YouTube rolled out in late 2025 that was slipping past the previous patch version on certain videos
  • SponsorBlock sync improved — segment database now updates faster after a video is first uploaded
  • Return YouTube Dislike patch refreshed — fixed a display bug where dislike counts would sometimes show as zero on first load
  • MicroG compatibility update — bundled MicroG version updated so sign-in works without errors on first install
  • Minor UI patch adjustments — small fixes to how custom themes render on a few specific screen resolutions

Version History — Old Versions

Some users prefer running an older version if a recent YouTube update has caused a patch to misbehave on their device.

YouTube Vanced & YouTube ReVanced

YouTube Vanced is the original mod that started all of this. It now runs on an outdated version of YouTube and some features have started breaking, but it is still worth trying if your device runs fine.

YouTube Premium APK comes as a ready-to-install file updated regularly to match the latest official YouTube release, and it includes YouTube Music Premium bundled without any extra cost.

ReVanced ExtendedActive

ReVanced Extended (RVX) is like a new version of a ReVanced, offering extra patches and settings beyond what the main project currently supports.

My Review

⭐⭐⭐⭐½ 4.6 out of 5

I’ve been using ReVanced on my Samsung Galaxy A54 for about 6 months. The main reason I installed it was to get rid of ads, and so far it has done that really well. Background Play works fine on my phone, and SponsorBlock is probably my favorite feature because it skips those long sponsor sections automatically.

The setup took me around 10 minutes the first time because I had to install MicroG and learn how ReVanced Manager works. After that, I didn’t need to mess with it again. The only issue I ran into was after a YouTube update late last year. The app wouldn’t launch properly, and I had to wait a couple of days for a new patch. Since then, it has been working normally. If you watch YouTube every day and hate ads, Revanced app is worth to try.

FAQs

Yes. The patching code is open source and publicly visible on GitHub, so anyone can review exactly what it does. The APK available on this site is scanned through VirusTotal before upload, and no root access is required.

ReVanced is the original project. RVX is an extended version maintained by a different developer. It includes extra patches not yet available in the main version, is updated more frequently, and offers more customization at the cost of a little stability

Both options work. Patching it yourself through ReVanced Manager lets you pick exactly which features to include. A pre-built APK with the common patches already applied is also available directly on this page.

MicroG replaces Google Play Services for patched apps, which is what allows you to sign in with your Google account. Without installing it first, sign-in will fail every time.

No. ReVanced patches the official Android YouTube app, and Apple’s iOS does not allow installing modified APK files at all.

Yes. All the patching code is hosted publicly on GitHub under the official ReVanced organization, where anyone can inspect, audit, or contribute to it.

Conclusion

YouTube ReVanced gives you everything the official Premium subscription offers, ad-free viewing, background play, and more, without the monthly fee. Because its patches get updated as YouTube changes, it stays current in a way older mods never could.

You can patch YouTube yourself with ReVanced Manager or install a pre-built APK if you just want the quickest setup. Either way, it only takes a few minutes to get started, and once it’s running, you can watch videos without the constant interruptions from ads.
